You might end up with WebSitesThatSuck
DIY, or Do-It-Yourself, is not an option most professionals can afford to exercise. Just about anyone can afford DIY, monetarily speaking. I don’t know of a businessperson who cannot come up with $49.95 a month to have a cookie cutter template with a few paragraphs relating to their business up and running in a few hours.
Unfortunately, most “site-builder websites” end up looking like this site. Just because you can install Joomla or WordPress easily does not mean you know how to use it, as seen here. These must be DIY attempts. At least I hope they are. No self-respecting designer would allow such incompetence. Or would they?
I’m not disparaging the capability of these companies to perform the services they are advertising, I am using them as an example of what can happen when DIY goes awry.
Lets talk about cost…
What is your time worth? I’m not talking about your potential salary/hours worked or your billable hours, I’m talking about your time. Only you can answer that question, but I’m sure that your time is better spent running your business or being with family than it is messing around with a DIY site-builder.
But I hired an in-house IT guy to do this so I don’t have to.
A good choice for many, but how many hours a week is this IT person really working on your site? For most companies, the amount of weekly work required for the proper maintenance of an average website does not justify the roughly $40,000 yearly salary (plus benefits and possibly bonuses on ecommerce) it requires to attract a decent “web guy”. If you want to spend $5K+ a month for this fellow, be my guest.
I’ll do it for $5k a month, no bennies! No Really…
We think we have a better deal for you here at MFParsons.
R.O.I. OF D.I.Y?
More accurately R.O.A.S (return on advertising spend) of D.I.Y. This is a negative number (loss) if done incorrectly.
What is the average monthly value of a single customer for your business?
What about the lifetime value of that customer?
What if you lose one to poor DIY, or no site at all?
If the acquisition cost of those customers is thousands of dollars, don’t you owe it to yourself to explore a lower-cost alternative, such as our service packages?
